What lasts longer, eau de parfum or eau de toilette?
Which type of fragrance lasts longer, EDP or EDT ? Is it worth paying more for an Eau de Parfum? In this post we will tell you how long each formula lasts, and why we think the Eau de Parfum is the best option and investment in most cases.
What lasts longer, eau de parfum or eau de toilette?
Before going into the details of which type of fragrance (EDT or EDP) lasts longer, it is worth stopping to analyze how these types of products are made to understand the differences in terms of fixation and intensity.
The essence of perfume is the aroma itself of the product in its maximum concentration. Depending on the percentage of presence of pure essence in proportion to the rest of the ingredients within a commercial fragrance, it is considered 'Eau de parfum' or 'Eau de toilette'. The higher the concentration of perfume essence, the greater the intensity, durability and fixation .
Thus, Eau de Parfum has a concentration of between 16% and 18% pure essence, mixed with other parts of water and alcohol. The duration of 'eau de parfum' fragrances ranges from 6 to 10 hours, although the scent of the base accord often remains impregnated in the textile for several days.
On the other hand, we have Eau de Toilette, which have a lower concentration of perfume essence, between 8% and 15% , and last around 3-5 hours . The intensity is lower and its sensation is fresher and lighter.
But these types of concentrations do not only exist in the world of perfumery, since at both extremes we find formulas with different proportions.
At the most intense end we have perfume ( Parfum ), with a concentration of 20% to 30%, and a duration of a minimum of 12 hours, but can reach 24 hours.
We also have a much lighter product than Eau de Toilette, called 'Eau de Cologne', with a perfume concentration between 2% and 4% and a duration of about 2 hours. These types of fragrances, also called 'colognes', are known for having one of the lowest concentrations of essential oils on the market.
Why is Eau de Parfum better?
Eau de Parfum is undoubtedly the perfume formula par excellence , as its intensity is able to last for most of the day, without being as intense as the pure essence of the perfume.
Although it is more expensive than Eau de Toilette, it lasts longer and therefore, it is not necessary to reapply the product throughout the day for the scent to remain on our skin.
However, if you like to change fragrances depending on the time of day, using multiple Eau de Toilettes is probably a better option for you, as they last less and so does the price you will pay for each fragrance.
