What are olfactory families?
The classification of perfumes by olfactory family was proposed by perfumers in the 20th century, with the aim of being able to classify (or at least try to) the great multitude of aromas that exist in the world of perfumery. This makes it much easier to get an idea of what a perfume smells like and which ones may be similar to it, something tremendously useful for the user.
Nowadays there is no single universally accepted classification, as this world is full of nuances and it is often very difficult to pigeonhole a fragrance into a single family, but it is a very valuable and approximate guide.
