Why did we stop smelling our own perfume?

Most of the time, after applying perfume, you stop smelling it within a few minutes, giving the impression that you are not wearing anything. You try to fix this immediately, but mistakenly, by applying more perfume, you end up smelling too much and, probably, you will end up not smelling it anyway.

Smell, our most primitive sense

But what is the reason why you almost never smell your own perfume? Smell is the most primitive sense we possess. The most amazing thing is that your olfactory heritage, which has been accumulating unconsciously over the years, has the ability to evoke images and sensations when perceiving a certain aroma, even if many years have passed since the first time you perceived it.

The problem with perfumes is that the sense of smell gets tired of perceiving the same smell over and over again. When you constantly perceive the same aromas, your brain filters out scents and the olfactory memory does not remember the usual aromas.

A perfume for every occasion

That is why it is recommended that both women and men have at least three perfumes: one for everyday use; another for weekends; and a final scent that we will choose for special occasions.

This trick is perfect for preventing your nose from quickly getting used to a particular smell. This way, it won't get bored of them and, by detecting several smells continuously, it will always detect new notes, not giving it time to filter them out as 'regular aromas' and get tired. In short, it's about tricking your sense of smell.

There are tricks to make the scent stay on your skin for longer and, especially if it is fresher, to make it last longer. For example, when you get out of the shower, your skin is damp and your pores are more open. This is an ideal time to apply it so that your skin absorbs the scents easily, they penetrate better and stay on for a longer time.

It is also advisable to apply the perfume in places where the body temperature tends to be a little higher, such as the inside of the wrists, elbows or on the sides of the neck. A trick to identify these small areas: by touching these areas you will feel your pulse better.
